Dorgu’s suitability for Amorim’s system and the way his team plays quickly emphasized what United is missing from the opposite flank. You need a player with similar energy levels and attack intentions.
The Wing-Backs are the key to get the Amorim system up and running, and this was highlighted by the former United captain Gary Neville in December when he analyzed what the squad needed before the January window.
“I think if you started, you would have to start with the basics of this system, namely the Wing-Backs, they stick together,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“If you don’t have the wingbacks that work up and down, which can attack and defend so well, and by the way, there are not many of them because there are not many teams who play Wing’s back, then they will fight.
“So you need two unique players in these wide areas, and I think that will be the starting point.”
Dorgu is of course the first piece in Amorim’s puzzle, and many other parts have to be added to the upcoming windows because he tries to tune his squad to his needs.
To ensure that Amorim can get his preferred formation up and running, he needs the right tools – and it has recently become obvious that Dalot is not the ideal adaptation to one of the two positions with wing baking positions. He lacks creativity and energy to have an impact from afar.
Although there are still very early days in Dorgu’s United career, the positive statements make up his difficult first half against Ipswich. The highlight of Amorim was the right to aim for his first explanation as a United boss.
