Why do the clocks go ahead and what effects do you have on your health?

The clocks proceed on Sunday and mark the beginning of the British summer time (BST).

This marks the end of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and means longer, lighter evenings from next week.

But apart from the fact that you lose an hour of sleep, the positive and negative effects of daylight savings are hotly discussed.

Here is everything you need to know why and when the clocks are going forward, as well as the effects on your body.

– When are the clocks going?

The watches take place on the last Sunday in March at 1 a.m. This year this will be on March 30th.

BST – or daylight savings (DST) – lasts until last Sunday in October when the clocks go back for an hour.

– What does it mean for our sunlight?

Early risers will notice darker morning immediately after the change of March, while the evenings will be easier when the sun goes down later.

If the sunrise and sunset continues to extend, parts of the United Kingdom will see almost 19 hours of daylight on June 21st until the summer solstice.

– What is the difference between British summer time and Greenwich?

GMT was the standard time used in Great Britain before DST was introduced.

This means that when the clocks return to the standard time zone in 1880 introduced in Great Britain.

– When was DST introduced?

Contrary to the popular opinion, the time jump was not introduced to the benefits of farmers. In fact, the farmers were never consulted.

Several dairy farmers have complained that the change disturbs their schedule, and the fighting cows, who have difficulties in dealing with the change in schedule.

In Great Britain, DST was first proposed by Inventor William Willett in 1907.

He published a brochure called the Waste of Daylight, in which his frustration surrounded that they did not get the best out of the summer days.

He initially suggested that watches jump forward in four steps in April in April and were reversed in the same way in September.

He died before a law was implemented in Great Britain, but his great-ur-grandchildren, Coldplay singer Chris Martin, saw it in action.

The first country that DST took over was Germany in 1916 in the First World War. Great Britain followed a few weeks later.

– What are the advantages of the watches in the future?

Dr. Jeffrey Kelu, circadian rhythm expert at King’s College London, says that there can be a number of arguments for DST.

He told the PA news agency: “I think there are some suggestions that there are fewer crimes because more people are out there in the evening and it is more difficult to commit crime.

“There are also fewer traffic accidents because there are more light and people can see the traffic conditions more clearly. However, there are contradictory studies.”

People also support the clocks that are increased in the morning, which can lead to a higher level of productivity.

– What are the negative?

Dr. Kelu said: “The circadian clock regulates our physiology and our metabolism, and we know that extreme cases such as postponement work and incorrect misalignment will lead to an increased risk of metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes.

“We believe that the change in the watch would affect health in a sense even for daylight.

“The most acute effect would be the loss of a sleep hour and also the inability to adapt to the new work plan. The scientists and communities as well as the sleeping experts actually suggest to remove daylight savings as a whole.”

– What can you do to prepare?

Dr. Kelu suggests changing the time that she sleeps in small steps in the days before the DST, so that it has less influence.

He said: “Because we cannot change the daily rescue period now, we can slowly prepare for this, even though there are not many days left.

“But we can slowly adjust to them by changing their watches for 15 minutes, 30 minutes and 45 minutes for the hours.”

– Should the savings period for daylight be abolished?

Yougov’s most recent survey published in October showed that 59% of the British, if our current system were scrapped, would permanently choose BST for the country.

Alex Mayer, Labor MP at Stable and Leighton Buzzard, called for a “great overhaul of time” and a conversation about how best to use the daylight lessons of our nation in a parliamentary debate.

She said a return to the so -called “Churchill Time”, which is used during the Second World War – when watches in winter and two hours in spring and summer have one hour in advance – could help to comply with annual electricity invoices of £ 485 million and reduce carbon emissions by more than 400,000 tons.

Dr. Kelu said: “I think the British government has not seriously designed the savings of daylight or actively discussed, but there are some discussions in the EU, and the states also try to adopt a law to eliminate daylight saving time.

“But the more complicated thing would be what time we use if we remove daylight savings time.

“For scientific evidence, we actually recommend staying at the standard time that would be GMT in Great Britain.

“We believe that morning light is the most important thing, since the morning light is necessary to synchronize your body watch with the environment. After balancing all this scientific evidence, we think that keeping the morning light is more important and more advantageous for health.”

US President Donald Trump released in December that he wanted to scrap DST. His Foreign Minister Marco Rubio also described the ritual of the change of time as “stupid” twice a year.
