Dorival Junior was released on Friday as a Brazil coach three days after a humiliating 4-1 qualification of the World Cup qualification by the bitter rival Argentina, the Confederation of Brazilian football (CBF) announced.
“Dorival Junior is no longer responsible for the Brazilian national team. Management thanks him and wishes him success for the rest of his career,” said the CBF in a statement.
The 62 -year -old Dorival has only been responsible since January 2024, the successor to Interims trainer Fernando Diniz, but has supervised a lack of qualification campaign for the 2026 final in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
The five-time World Cup winners of Brazil are fourth in the South American qualifying table, 10 points behind the defending champion of Argentina, who have already insured their place in the final.
Brazil also sits behind Ecuador and Uruguay.
There are six automatic qualification points for teams from South America.
Brazil will visit Ecuador and hosts of Paraguay on June 4th and 9th in qualifying habits.
After the service on Tuesday, the letter was on the wall for Dorival in Buenos Aires.
“Nobody expected what we saw today, and the responsibility is entirely me,” the coach admitted after the game.
Dorival took over the Selecao after winning domestic titles with Flamengo and Sao Paulo.
His appointment was only announced after months of speculation about the possible arrival of Real Madrid’s Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti.
The Brazilian media claim that Ancelotti is again one of the goals to achieve Dorival’s successor, as well as the Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus, who is currently responsible for Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.
