Starmus La Palma 2025 will be an outstanding celebration of science with some of the largest heads in the world – and I can hardly wait. | Credit: starmus
In just a few weeks I pack my suitcases and go to a beautiful island off the coast of the Northwest Africa, which is characterized by volcanic activities and dense, forested terrain. While the beautiful port cities, extensive beaches and high -towering waterfalls are a big draw for many tourists, I am looking for a little more … “Outside of this world”.
In April, the island of La Palma-love as “Isla Bonita” (beautiful island) will be known-a beacon for space lovers, scientists and star gazers, as it celebrates a four-day festival, celebrates science, celebrates the cosmos and the art of discussion under one of the dark sky of darkness in the world.
The “The Island of Stars” festival is more than just poetic from April 25th to 28th – it is literally. La Palma, the northwestern island of the Canary Islands, Spain, houses some of the darkest, clearest sky in the northern hemisphere and the legendary gran telescopio Canaria (GTC), the largest optical and infrianced telescope with one-apertures in the world.

Starmus is pretty unique in his mission. The festival combines space research, music and public commitment to a lively celebration among the stars. I was lucky enough to watch this last year in Starmus in Bratislava in Starmus 2024, and you can bet on your bottom -dollar, which I am also looking forward to this year’s celebrations.
The 2025 edition of Starmus includes more than 45 speakers, including Nobel laureate KIP Thorne, legendary astronauts Chris Hadfield, Kathryn Thornton and Terry Virtts as well as the legendary zoology and primatologist lady Jane Goodall, just a few.
But for enthusiastic Stargazer, Stardarmus is not just lectures – it is an immersive celebration of science and night sky. Several events take place on the whole island, with Starmus Camps in Santa Cruz de la Palma and Los Llanos de Aridane to bring science and amazement. These camps are a great way for the public to experience hands in exhibits, space talks and star gazing opportunities.

In addition, this year’s festival has a deeper mission. In 2021, La Palma was stuck on a volcanic outbreak, the thousands of people and parts of the island. Due to its flawless dark sky, Starmus La Palma 2025 has committed the continued recovery of the island to be another top tourist destination for night sky -enthusiasts. It offers this support from its ability to revitalize the local economy and create spaces for the commitment in the community.

Evening in the starmus will come back with music under the stars, including the Sonic Universe concert on April 26 in Puerto de Tazacorte as well as classic concerts in Santa Cruz de la Palma on April 25 and 27.
Starmus was founded by the astrophysical Garik Israelian and Sir Brian May, the guitarist of the queen, and the astrophysicist of the queen and remains a powerful interface between art, science and space. And it is only improved by the fact that this year’s special edition not only offers a trip through the cosmos – but also a warm homage to the mind and strength of La Palma.
