While the man, who was known as the “GUS”, until the time the Panther’s four primeers had long since disappeared, he was significantly involved in transforming a club into an outfit with a winning season in nine from 2005 to 2013 that has only missed the final twice since.
Gould has not promoted cultural change in Penrith. He put it in Sledenhonmer. He switched to high -ranking players, coaches and administrators who were reluctant to change. He spent great recruitment, development, junior structures and facilities to convey a culture of success. The panthers had the ultimate payment.
If all of this sounds familiar, it could be because Gould in Belmore has issued the same cultural lightning war and that Canterbury-Bankstown has brought back into real primeership competition since the 1960s.

The Bulldogs this week are going to Brisbane this week and are sitting in their first six games for the first time in 1938. It was an incredible climb from the ash for a club that had reached some devastating deep stalls after years of mismanagement in a chaos. A club that was very accustomed to success, the final in three consecutive seasons only missed six lost seasons in this 50-year run between 1967 and 2016-only. But the Bulldogs put together seven seasons in a row from 2017 to 2023 and took the 11th or worse every year. During this time, Canterbury went 48-116, committed Dean Pay and Trent Barrett to train the team and was crippled by infinite political struggles. Instead of building the basics for success, the club fell deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness.
Gould wasted little time with subtleties after he had come to the club before the 2022 season. Coach Trent Barrett was forced at the beginning of the season, while almost the entire squad – only Matt Burton, Max King, Jacob Kiraz and Kurtis Morrin survived. Belmore did not need any small waves of change. A tidal shaft was needed.
The most important signing came when coach Cameron Ciraldo was stopped for the 2023 season. It was a hard appearance for a rookie trainer, even one who was packed up and came out of a club that had just claimed two titles. Ciraldo came with a clear plan – the Bulldogs would be rebuilt on the basics of hard work, solidarity and tenacity. That was the historic Canterbury -Dna. It is also in Ciraldo’s Make -up.
The head coach and Gould quickly emitted those who did not match the reviews of the Team First character. Even if it caused problems when Jackson Topine started legal steps against the club, the duo never fluctuated. While the club understood the need to bring talent to the elite level, and Stephen Crichton and Viliame Kikau signed, it was the obligations led by character that have changed the club’s assets.
The bulldogs were widely mocked to sign a number of supply companies in 2024 without space in the upper class, but although there were some mistakes with Blake Taafe, Drew Hutchison and Jake Turpin, a team with title defenses, have Connor Tracey and Kurt Mann as center. Bronson Xerri had a chance after a four -year drug ban and is now one of the best centers in the Premiership. Jacob Preston could not take a look at the roosters in the top class, while Josh Curran was a first class in the Warriors – both are now good for an original call. Toby Sexton was difficult to win the No. 7 jersey at the low titans, but was on the right track for a team that is now on the right track to play the final in two seasons.

The cultural lightning war has harvested immediate and sustainable rewards, whereby the Bulldogs for their first Grand Final lying area are in 11 seasons in the mixture to end a 21-year-old drought for the Premiership. The story tells us that the most reliable indicator of long -term success in the NRL is defense. Of the last 21 premiers, 19 have defensively classified under the top thread. Only three teams in the past decade have defensively classified outside the top 4 of the top 4 and have reached the grand finale. Defense wins primeerships and the Bulldogs pursue a historical defensive season and enter only 9.67 points in their first six games.
Since 2008, only six teams have closed their opposition twice in the first eight rounds because the Bulldogs made in seven this year. None of these teams took lower than the fifth on the ladder, while two ended the Premiership Ruhm and a couple other than second. To start a season well, as the unbeaten bulldog did, is also a great guide and teams with a direct or share of the lead after the eighth round reached the Grand Final in five of the past seven years.
It was an astonishing rise of the Belmore boys and this is not a false dawn. The bulldogs are real business and will be set up as a real primeership competitor for the coming years.
