by The Trump administration has canceled the rental agreement for its top laboratory for climate surveillance in New York City from May 31, according to an e -mail from CNN.
In the E -Mail, the director of the NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center in Maryland informed the employees about the upcoming closure of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and the transition to removed.
The affected laboratory, also known as NASA GISS, is rented by Columbia University and is located above the diner on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, which could be seen in the TV show “Seinfeld”. Scientists work climate and space studies there while working with researchers in Columbia.
“The work continues, the data, the products, science are continued because the science of people is not carried out by buildings,” NASA GISS director Gavin Schmidt told CNN.
A NASA spokesman said in a statement: “The employees would be temporary remote labor agreements, while NASA is looking for and evaluating options for a new room for the GISS team.”
The Trump government is currently struggling with Columbia to anti -Semitism and other affairs and holds billions back in federal research financing. On Thursday, a federal judge significantly restricted the administration’s ability to block the funds of schools for diversity, equity and inclusion – or Dei programs. Two other dishes take into account similar challenges.
In addition to the national ocean and atmospheric management, the NASA laboratory pursues the global climate conditions and serves as one of the main centers worldwide for this information. “We will offer the support that the employees receive at short notice for the transition to distant work agreements, since the agency is looking for a new, constant space for the team,” said Goddard Director Mackenzie Lystrup in the email, a copy of which was shared with CNN.
A NASA source that applied for anonymity due to fear of retaliation told CNN that it would be more difficult for the laboratory to carry out its missions from a distance, and the step was “demoralized” for the workforce. In addition, the same scientists are waiting “that the ax falls on the mission of geoscientific” in the agency, they said CNN.
A proposal of the administrative budget issued by the congress would reduce the agency’s scientific programs by almost 50%.
“GISS has an important place in the history of space science, for decades the groundbreaking work for understanding the planetary atmospheres and systems – especially that of our own earth,” wrote Lystrup in the e -mail. “And during the rental agreement ends, the institute’s mission continues.”
