The box -shaped Bouclé jacket has been a synonym for the French style in 1954 since Coco Chanel’s debut in 1954. The relaxed shape was increased by golden buttons and a braided cladding and proposed as a piece that should be worn with a suitable dress or a suitable skirt.
Today it remains one of the building blocks of a modern cloakroom. It is a template that has been imitated, revised and reinvented by High Street and Designer brands, but what we buy remains in the hope that it will give our outfits a little Je a sais quoi.
It is a piece that endured because it is useful. It has a place in both intelligent and informal contexts, as chic over a jeans that is draped over the shoulders with a cocktail dress. If in doubt, just keep it. Throw it over a simple white t -shirt or a crispy, awkward shirt. Type it together with jeans and trainers. Button it on the chest and let the floor swing out to create an A-line form. The key is not to be too precious – be it Chanel or a good old Zara.
