by With a surname like his, there is no way for Archie Vaughan to escape the inevitable comparisons, but the teenager says that he is full of admiration for his father’s trade approach.
As a top order key, who brought useful off-spin-go like his father of the 19-year-old Archie-Tilt in Somerset’s 2024 County Championship Tilt and achieved 11 game winders in a dramatic victory over Surrey.
In the last month of the season, he had an average of 33.7 with the bat at the top of the order and took 15 gates at an average of 20 each. After a successful end of summer, Vaughan was awarded the England U19 captain for the South Africa trip.
“Papa and I rarely talk about Cricket”
Vaughan Junior speaks of a referee stand with a view to the Green Gras of Taunton before the media day before Somerset’s day and explains how the connection with his father affects his cricket.
“To be honest, I think he is [Michael] I am quite aware that I just let myself out and play cricket freely and just enjoy it, if he thinks I don’t enjoy it, then he will probably enter there, ”says Vaughan Telegraph sport.
“But we rarely talk about Cricket most of the time and I think he only left the work to the great coaches we have with England – he fully trusts her skills.”
After Vaughan started playing his cricket in a club in derbyshire and at the level of the age group for Cheshire, he joined the Somerset Academy in 2020 when he was a student in Millfield.
It was only in May last year Vaughan signed his first professional contract with Taunton and celebrated his senior debut at the County Championship at the end of August. When asked about the influence of his father, who accidentally had the wrong kit for his media tasks and has the full white first-class kit instead of the club polo shirts:
“I’ve played with Rocky Flintoff since the Unter 9 games.”
Vaughan was accompanied by another player in the U19s in 2024, whose father was part of this memorable series 20 years ago, Rocky Flintoff, although the couple has a longer relationship than the training camp before the season in autumn.
“I played back to Club Cricket with him [Rocky] When we were in the U-9S and he must have been about six or so, “says Vaughan.
“He is a real talent for such a young age and he will achieve a few really good things with Lancashire and probably with England.”
Flintoff Junior was then called to the England Lions and achieved a century against an Australia XI. But instead of his meteoric climb, Vaughan remembers a time before the couple was even introduced into the hard ball cricket.
“I only remember to have played with him Club Cricket with a soft ball, and then it’s pretty surreal if we play in the three lions for the U19,” he says. “We definitely talked about how far we got out of there.”
The U19 of England won the three-game series in South Africa 1-0. In the second test, Vaughan completed the victory with six gates for only 19 runs, but says that the tour had its challenges. “Being a captain was a really good challenge and I was probably pretty hard on myself with the ball and I probably took myself a little too quickly instead of giving myself time,” he admits.
When asked whether he enjoyed being captain, says Vaughan, who speaks in a similar way to his father to his father in the test game: “I did it. It sometimes put pressure on my eyelash and my bowling when I led to school, but I think I went into this tour to enjoy it and my captain separated from my blow and bowling.”
How Lockdown led boredom to spin success
Vaughan was primarily a batsman before turning his arm in the Lockdown because the boredom was locked up. Instead of drawing his attention to the seam that he admitted that he had “injured” his body, it was the attraction of a five-yard lead that inspired the switch to spin. Vaughan is as great as his father, and this height helps him to secure the combination of jump and rotation, which can be so problematic for striking men.
Somerset traditionally was one of the most spider-friendly surfaces in the country and was with England with the left weapon tweaker Jack Leach that the district was moving its way to win over Surrey in September.

When Vaughan is asked about Lach and Shoaib Bashir: “It is nice to hear perspective when Leachy or Bash says:” It doesn’t get out well “and I think” now, you have to bowling well all the time, you play for England. “
“But you have these problems and it is nice to meet my expectations when I am in my bowling career early.
Although he admittedly sees himself as a pounder while he develops his shoot, Vaughan can see his future as an all -rounder. “I believe [my bowling] Is still quite young and something that I try to manage my own expectations because it definitely doesn’t come out. “
When Vaughan is asked about his own ambitions, he focuses on the more immediate task of working well for Somerset and securing a place in the first team of season of the district championship.
