The Arctic sea ice has had its weakest winter structure since the beginning of the record perception 47 years ago, a symptom of climate change in which the world will have an impact, the scientists said on Thursday.
The Arctic reaches its maximum sea ice in March every year and then begins a six -month melting season. The National Snow and Ice Data Center said that the top measurement carried out on Saturday was 5.53 million square kilometers (14.33 million square kilometers) – about 80,000 square kilometers smaller than the lowest predecessor in 2017.
This is a difference in the size of California.
“Warming temperatures cause the ice to take off,” said ice data scientist Walt Meier.
Jennifer Francis, a scientist in the Woodwell Climate Research Center in Cape Cod, said this was another bell -loving alarm bell in the form of a broken recording.
“The disappearance of sea ice is a particularly worrying story because it is really an early warning system that draws us aware of a variety of serious changes,” said Francis in an email.
Scientists said that the warning conditions in the Arctic – the region four times faster than the rest of the world – influence the weather elsewhere. Printing and temperature differences between north and south shrinkage. This weakens the jet electricity, moving along the weather systems, which dives on the south with cold outbreaks and storms further south, which according to Snow and Ice Center and Francis often rain or snow.
“The warming winter atmosphere over the Arctic circle affects large weather patterns that influence those of us outside of the Arctic,” said Julienne Stroeve, ice scientist at the University of Manitoba.
Stroeve also found from the smaller sea ice that there is not only less of it. The remaining ice is thin enough so that more of it melts quickly this summer, said Stroeve. She warned that a record area in winter does not guarantee a small area in summer.
The melting Arctic sea ice – mainly in summer – makes the polar bear population smaller, weaker and hungry because they rely on the sea ice from which they can hunt, said scientists. And winter sea ice is particularly important for fishing and sealing puppies, said Meier.
The largest year since Arctic Meis began in 1979 was 6.42 million square miles (16.64 million square kilometers). This means that since the satellites began to increase the winter summit of the Arctic sea ice by about the size of Pakistan.
When Winter -Meereis is going well, it can be more than halfway onto the ground towards equator, China, China, China and Canada’s Gulf of St. Lawrence said Meier.
Meier said that sea ice is shrinking all four seasons, but the most important season for the general health of the Arctic ice cream is summer. This is because ice-free water warm up faster, keep more energy and make autumn and winter warmer and weaker.
The five lowest quantities for the Arctic Winter Arctic Sea ice have been since 2015.
At the beginning of this month, the Antarctic broke out that a record for low sea ice is the season in which the region meets its minimum-and ended with the second lowest sea level.
There are generally more sea ice in Antarctic and the two poles are a little different, but in February the global sea ice – the combination of Arctic and Antarctic – made a record low, said Meier.
