The earthquake on Sunday near Malibu is part of a larger seismic pattern in South California.
The region has had a number of moderate earthquakes since 2024. In 2024, Southern California experienced 15 seismic sequences with at least one earthquake or higher earthquake, as can be seen from a count of seismologists Lucy Jones, a CalTech research associate. This is the highest annual total in the past 65 years and surpasses the 13, which were seen in 1988.
The earthquake on Sunday has so far been the earthquake in Southern California in 2025, Jones said on Sunday.
In the area of Malibu, three quake has been larger than size 4 in size 4 in the past 13 months.
Are these templates a sign of larger quakes?
Experts have warned for months that the latest quake does not offer any additional clarity about the time of the next devastating earthquake in Southern California.

“For decades, seismologists have spent reading the tea leaves to search for patterns,” said Susan Hough, a seismologist at the US Geological Survey, a few months ago.
“The seismic network was installed in South California 100 years ago,” she said, “because scientists thought that small earthquakes would show patterns before the big earthquakes took place. And that just didn’t work.”
One thing was clear, she said: “Nobody found patterns that are statistically meaningful before big earthquakes appear.”
However, the latest flood of quake should increase the threat from the notoriously active seismic landscape of the state, explain experts and remind you of how many Californians live in a danger zone.
The Eastside La Eartsbquakes of the summer focused on mistakes associated with the Puente Hills -Schuzen Auslung system, which is located under the city center of LA, and the parts of the Southeast La district, the San Gabriel Valley and the district of North Orange.

In the past, areas near Malibu have had stronger earthquakes. On January 18, 1989, an earthquake of strength 5 eight miles southeast of Malibu Point under Santa Monica Bay occurred. Several people were injured, objects fell out of the shelves in shops, and some windows were broken in Southern California, according to the earth’s dating center.
On New Year’s Day in 1979, a quake of the strength 5.2 met about eight miles south of Malibu Point, remarkable because it hit Bowl game between USC and Michigan during the Rose Bowl.
“Some of the fans in the stadium were alerted by shaking, but the game continued,” said the data center.
Earthquakes can reach up to a size 8 in the Malibu region, said the USGS geophysicist Morgan Page a few months ago, and that was “quite standard for everywhere in California”. This is because individual errors can combine in a single seismic event, which leads to an earthquake with a larger size.
It was initially assumed that an earthquake of size 4.7 in Malibu on September 12th had a 40% probability of being associated with the Malibu fault, and a 46% probability of being associated with the Anacapa error.
Expand of this size break only a relatively small section of a error, perhaps only a few hundred meters, experts say. Such modest events often occur in small, non -mapping errors.
Where did we see the recent seismic activity?
Malibu – The Malibu area was a hot spot. Exactly 13 months ago there was an earthquake of 4.6 – on February 9, 2024 – strong enough to throw objects from a counter. On September 12th there was also a strength of 4.7 – so amazing enough that the mayor of the city and his wife dipped under their kitchen table.
Ontario – An earthquake of the strength 4 before dawn on October 6th near the International Airport Ontario. In Ontario, one of the most populous cities in San Bernardino County, there were five earthquakes with strength 3 or larger in the course of the month before the earthquake on October 6.
The east side – On August 12, Eastside LA was torn by an earthquake in El Sereno by an earthquake in El Sereno and on June 2, 3.4 in strength.
Kern County – An earthquake of the strength 5.2, which has been most to the region for three years, shook on August 6th in Southern California with an epicenter northwest of the wine vine. Another widespread quake, they sizes 4.9, scored about 13 miles northeast of Barstow on July 29.
What about damage?
The quake on Sunday was felt in the region, but there were no reports on damage.

This corresponds to experience last year. The quakes in 2024 rattled in the region, but the damage was decisively modest, such as: B. Objects from the shelves because they were relatively small atmosphere.
