Retton became a well-known name in the United States after winning five medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, including a gold in the all-round competition that was the first individual Olympic gymnastics medal, which was ever won by an American and achieved a perfect 10 on the vault in the final rotation. The performance of the Virginia native native landed on the front of the Wheaties boxes and knocked on the explosion of sport in the USA.

After her career as a gymnastics, Retton remained active in the media and performed in a series of films and television programs. She was included in the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997 and was the first woman to be selected to the Houston Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.

Retton was also a member of the President of the President of Physical Fitness and Sport under US President George W. Bush.

In 2023 she became seriously ill with pneumonia and was in the intensive care unit for a few weeks. At the time, her daughter Kelley said that her mother had “fighting her life” and began a fundraiser to cover the medical costs for Retton, who had no health insurance. The donations to the fundraiser rose in the amount of almost 500,000 US dollars. Retton recovered, but said that she had “confronted death in her eyes” during her illness.
