(Newsnation) -Research monkeys that were used in a tuberculosis study stood out of the prospect of being put to sleep after the Trump administration from Harvard University, but now a philanthropic organization has offered to help.
Harvards Dr. Sarah Fortune had warned that Rhesus -Makaken could be put to sleep because of the Federal Grant Freeze. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine examine the primates as part of a broader project coordinated by Harvard.
Harvard travels back against Trump’s demands
On Friday, the Boston Globe reported that the open philanthropy based in California approved a grant of $ 500,000 to support research in Pennsylvania.
Fortune said she was thrilled to learn something about the gift, but people for the ethical treatment of animals criticized them because they raised the ghost of the euthanization of the animals. PETA, which opposes the use of animals for research, said the monkeys could have been given domestic masters or sanctuaries.
“Experiments on animals do not produce healing and treatments for people, they are cruel and there are superior human relevant methods,” said the group in a press release.
Harvard refused to follow various guidelines of the Trump administration as a condition for grants. Federal civil servants have frozen billions in research financing.
