Zermatt is an independent dining destination with more than 100 restaurants in the village and around 50 huts and restaurants in the ski area, some of which are equipped with Michelin -Stern.
The gastronomy continues to develop; In addition to the established family -run favorites, there are new, modern restaurants that offer the world cuisine and contemporary turns on Valaisan Mountain Classics. Everyone serves as much from the region and biological products as possible, with the focus on meat and cheese on site, with sustainable agricultural practices being passed on to the generations.
Zermatt is a car -free city and has a very strong ethos of sustainability and reduction in food waste. Every year hoteliers meet to share best practices, and some favorites include the guidelines of Hotel Bellerive, sandwiches from breakfast buffet residues that are offered free of charge to the guests. The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise Restaurant at the top of the Klein Matterhorn with 3,838 m holds the Minergie-P® certification, a level of quality for consumption with low energy consumption.
While sustainability is important, the price is also and there is no longer the fact that the food is not cheap with a view to the Matterhorn – but with a little exploration you will find options for most budgets. There is also the possibility to go to Cervinia to get a cheap and delicious plate of pasta for lunch. One last advice on eating in Zermatt – even Mountain restaurants are very busy. So book long in advance if you can.
Further Zermatt inspiration can be found in our guidelines for the best accommodation and in the après skiing of the resort.
