The building blocks for life are brought to earth by asteroids that bombed our planet a long time ago.
But the amino acids that form proteins, the ring -shaped molecules, from which DNA and other organic compounds consist of, are only chemistry.
They became biology in the oceans of the early earth.
Just like it is not known. But life developed.
And once that had done it, could it have happened again?
The evidence of Planet K2-18B is tempting.
The analysis of how its atmosphere absorbs light, the presence of chemicals that are generated on the ground of oceanplanz and other microorganisms.
The finding is not yet certain, and it only indirectly supports the idea that the planet is home to life, but it is the strongest sign that we are not alone in the universe.
So far, more than 5,500 planets have been found outside of our solar system.
Many are on tracks around stars that they would bring to the Goldillocks zone – neither too hot nor too cold to have liquid water. In other words, habitable.
But if life develops, it is a number game.
The modeling suggests that in our galaxy there could be 300 million planets or moons in our galaxy with conditions that are suitable for life.
That is 300 million options for biology to start.
