Jakarta, Indonesia (AP) and the volcano of Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki in southern Central Indonesia broke out three times until Friday and sent an ash column 8,000 meters high and asked the authorities to expand the danger zone by the volcano by the volcano. Information on evacuations was not immediately available.
The volcano on the remote island of Flores in the province of East Nusa Tenggara had increased hundreds of earthquakes and visible volcanic activities in the past seven days.
The authorities increased the outbreak alarm to the highest level and expanded the danger zone of 7 kilometers (4.5 miles) to 8 kilometers from the crater.
Due to the outbreak, several airlines canceled flights between Australia and Indonesian tourist island of Bali, while other international and domestic flights were delayed onto the island.
The residents were warned, watchful for strong rainfall that triggered lava flows in rivers from the volcano, the Indonesian geology agency said in a statement.
An outbreak of Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki in November killed nine people and injured dozens.
The 1,584 meter mountain (5,197 feet) is a Twin Vulcano with the Mount Lewotobi Perempuan in the Flores Timur district.
Indonesia is an archipelago of 270 million people with frequent seismic activity. It has 120 active volcanoes and sits along the “Ring of Fire”, a horseshoe -shaped series of seismic fault lines that surround the Pacific basin.
