by Cape Canaveral, Fla. (AP)-The NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore and Sununi Williams are not the first to run late in space, and their 9½-month mission is not in any endurance record.
But never before has a quick trip turned into such a long distance.
The couple started last June in June on a test flight from Boeing’s New Starliner Crew Capsule, which saw itself as eight days. When they defeated SpaceX on Tuesday, they had spent 286 days freely – 36 – longer than expected.
“If you look at it mathematically, this is the largest percentage expansion, according to the percentage of the original planned mission,” Ken Bowersox, head of NASA.
A former astronaut, BowerSox saw his own space station mission abruptly extended. He was up there with Don Pettit, who is currently on board the Orbiting laboratory when shuttle Columbia broke apart during the re -occurrence in 2003, killed all seven on board and the shuttle fleet explained for more than two years.
“The reasons were terrible that we stayed in our mission longer,” said Bowersox, whose planned four -month stay came for more than five months.

Longest US space ride
